Sexual Health
Function

Sexual wellbeing includes comfort, communication, safety and personal values.
Sexual Health
Variation is expected
Desire, arousal and response differ widely between people and across a single person's life.
Distress is the threshold
Clinical guidance defines dysfunction partly by whether the change causes the person meaningful distress.
Change matters more than level
A shift from your own baseline is more informative than any comparison with an average.
Context is part of the picture
Sleep, mood, medicines, pain and relationship circumstances all influence sexual response.

This matters because a large share of sexual-health searching is driven by comparison with averages that were never meant to be targets. Population figures describe a range; they do not define a standard anyone is failing to meet.
Sexual Health

- A change that has lasted several weeks or months rather than a single episode
- Pain during or after sex, at any point and of any severity
- Bleeding that is unexplained, after sex, or between periods
- A new symptom that began after starting or changing a medicine
- Sores, lumps, unusual discharge, itching or burning
- A possible exposure to a sexually transmitted infection, with or without symptoms
- Distress, avoidance or relationship strain caused by the concern
Infections are a specific case: many are symptom-free for a period, so testing is based on exposure and screening intervals rather than on whether anything feels wrong.
Sexual Health
Barriers
Correct and consistent condom use reduces transmission of several infections, though not all, and not equally.
Testing intervals
Screening frequency depends on age, partners and exposure, not on whether symptoms are present.
Vaccination
Some sexually transmitted infections are vaccine-preventable; eligibility is individual.
Preventive medicine
HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis is a prescription pathway with assessment, testing and ongoing monitoring — not a self-started product.

Confirm the licence
Check that the facility and the individual clinician are licensed for the care being offered, and for the relevant specialty.
Ask how records are handled
Ask what is recorded, how long it is kept, who inside the organisation can see it, and what would be shared outside it.
Clarify what the appointment includes
Establish whether the fee covers examination, tests and a follow-up review, and what is charged separately.
Establish the follow-up route
Know who to contact with a result, a side effect or a new symptom, and how quickly a response should be expected.
